Reflection .. finally starting to understand this whole blog thing !
Now that I am slowly starting to figure out this blog thing, I can now enjoy it a little more. I had another great night in class last night! The part I found most interesting was when we looked deeper into those 26 skills. I know realize why some of my physical education teachers made me do some of the things we did in phys.ed. Like Brooke and Bailey mentioned they remembered tossing the basketball against the wall and that instantly brought me back to the gym in grade seven. I did the exact same thing. The scariest part for me is teaching something I do not understand or cannot do myself... the backwards roll. I don't feel confident enough yet to teach that to a student when I can not even teach myself. Especially a movement like that as there are definant safety risks. In other subjects you can find all of the information on line but I feel phys.ed you need to be able to practice the movement skill to better teach your students. I hope to learn in this class how to successfully do a backwards roll !

I would have to agree with you Karissa when you speak about teaching the things that I cannot do myself. How am I to teach something that I cannnot model for my students? I would hate to be that teacher that is all talk and never shows the skills. I am not sure what the solution is to this dilemma, but practice does make perfect, hopefully!
ReplyDeleteI agree with both of you girls! Some of the most simplest moves can be so detailed and in order to teach these skills successfully we must familiarize ourselves with the Phys Ed curriculum. One of the moves that I am nervous to model is falling from a standing position (I could never do this in high school - I was too scared!) Hopefully this course will calm some of these nerves and we will learn more about the curriculum!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree! We must become more familiar and comfortable with the curriculum to be able to teach our students to the best of our abilities. Melissa I also agree that practice can only improve our skills. Jill I am also terrified to fall from a standing position, I was never taught the appropriate way. But I know you can do it :)!
ReplyDeleteKarissa I am so excited that you got your blog set up :) I agree with you girls too; it is scary to teach somethingn we may not know how to do ourselves, but that is why we have each other! The purpose of these blogs are for them to become a resource to us even when this class is over. Next year (or in many years to come) when we have questions or concerns, we can look right here to help each other. Check out my blog for a great resource I just bogged about that may help you in those times of need :)
ReplyDeleteTrust me ladies, there will be times that you may not feel confident in modeling the skill that is being taught. That is okay. What are some other options? Perhaps older students in the school. I would always find the gymnast in the school and have him or her help with the little ones. There is also resources on youtube. I did tweet a clip on the common errors of a forward roll. That channel also has videos on the backward roll.
ReplyDeleteIn society today everything seems to be on the internet somewhere, so that is one place I would go to for help. I know that at the school I am pre-interning in there are two physical education teachers so they could collaborate and help each other out. Colleagues can also be very useful resources and you may be surprised at some of the skills your colleagues may have. My goal is to read up on the backwards roll and master it by the end of the semester!
