Last Wednesday there was an interview on CTV with the middle years section on whether they thought teachers are over worked, if they are given more work than they can handle. It really got me thinking and questioning what kind of teacher I want to be for my students. After our class last Thursday I came to the realization that prioritizing my life and getting organized is the best thing I can do for my sanity and career. As a society we are always go, go, go, always in a rush. We don't take the time to appreciate the small things (being mindful), sometimes the most important things. As a future educator I am going to make sure that I do not loose site of things, appreciate the small things, get organized and prioritize my life.
I tried to find the link for the CTV news but couldn't so I hope you all had the chance to watch it!
Karissa, I find that I am continually reminding myself to take some "me time" and focus on my inner self. In our ECS 410 class a teacher came in and spoke about attacking anxiety. Since that day, I have been practicing a number of strategies to help remove the stress from my life. Whenever I get that uneasy anxious feeling in the pit of my stomach I remember belly breaths. Also, whenever I find my mind wandering and thinking about things in the past or future that are causing me distress, I stop and bring myself back to the present and try to focus on what is happening right now. I also signed myself up for a belly dancing class this semester and I find it great for helping me distress. Are there any strategies you use to distress?
ReplyDeleteThe presentation was great and very helpful! I am lucky as she is my co-operating teacher and I have learnt so much beneficial knowledge in relation to reducing the stress in my life and being mindful. It is amazing to watch grade two students calm themselves after an incident on the playground or after having a bad day. I have witnessed some of the students coach other students to take their belly breaths when they can tell that other student is feeling anxiety and stress. My goal is to become more educated on this strategy as I would love to use it in my classroom because I have seen it work, I know it works.
ReplyDeleteSome of the strategies that I use are now the belly breaths and bringing my mind back to the present moment. I also enjoy sports so hockey, going to the gym and going for walks (especially out on the farm) are ways for me to let off steam and take some "me time" which is so crucial!
